Bergen County Code Ninjas: Teaching Today’s Kids to be the Problem Solvers of Tomorrow | Bergen North Moms

Did you know that all Bergen County Code Ninjas are owned by people who live right in Bergen County?  There are so many great things to learn about these local businesses!

Coding has been called “the literacy of the 21st century” for good reason. Just like math, science and literature, coding is a key aspect of understanding our technologically advanced world. While many schools offer computer education, they are often under-resourced and are unable to offer the sophisticated ongoing coding curriculum that kids need to be successful in today’s technological environment. That’s where Code Ninja comes in. It’s a fun after-school program where kids learn to code while using games that they already know and love, such as Minecraft® and Roblox®. They are not just passively playing—they are actually building games – and having a great time doing it.

“There’s a huge need for the next generation to not only understand technology, but know how it works,” says George Kythreotis, owner of the Norwood location of Code Ninjas. “Coders learn how to use logic, be resourceful and solve problems, giving them a distinct advantage in everyday life, even if they don’t end up choosing coding as a career.”

Each of the four Code Ninjas centers in Bergen County — Midland Park, Norwood, Ramsey and Saddle Brook — is equipped with a state-of-the-art security system. Only kids and staff are allowed in the learning centers, called Dojos, and are given wristbands that grant them access. Meanwhile, parents can relax in a special separate waiting area. All Covid health and safety protocols are strictly enforced.

Another benefit of learning to code is that children not only become problem solvers in other areas of their lives, but they also learn to become creators rather than consumers of content. This is a mind shift that will open them up to new ideas for careers as they move through high school and into college.

Code Ninjas class offerings include:

  • Code Ninjas Create—An exciting learning adventure for tech-loving kids ages 7 to 14 where kids build video games while developing ninja coding skills on their path from white to black belt. They can attend multiple times a week if desired—and just drop-in during available center hours. The Create curriculum is directly aligned with the Computer Science Teachers Association K-12 standards.

  • Code Ninja Jr.—This course helps students ages 5 to 9 build a foundation of coding and learning critical problem-solving skills through a fun and completely visual curriculum.

  • At-Home Coding—Even at home, kids can stay engaged and keep coding with the support and guidance from Code Ninjas Senseis just a click away.
