Meet Sheena! | Bergen Moms Network

Bergen North Moms, Meet Sheena!

We are so humbled to have met such and incredibly strong and courageous Bergen County Mother, Attorney and Business Owner.  Listening to Sheena’s strength through her accounts of being a parent through loss and her children’s medical complications elicited so many emotions from us.  As she spoke of silver linings through it all, we felt inspired and our hearts were full of hope.

Let’s show our support to this amazing woman by sending positive thoughts and love to her as your read her story.

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Bergen County?

With the exception of undergrad and a few years thereafter where I resided in San Diego California, I have lived in Bergen County my entire life.  I originally grew up in Old Tappan, but have settled down with my husband and daughter in Westwood.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

I am a twin mom.  My daughter Berkeley is twenty-two months old and my son, Ryan, Berkeley’s twin passed away at 8 months old due to a rare kidney disease.

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

I have been an athlete my entire life. When I was in the third-grade I was so competitive with the boys that I opted out of playing softball and signed up for little league baseball. At that time, in Old Tappan, there were some parents very upset at the notion of a little girl playing little league baseball and they were in opposition. My mother fought for my admittance, and ultimately, I was accepted to play little league, and started at second base.

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?

After all that I have been through with two very sick children over roughly the last two years, I could never name every person who deserves recognition, so I will broadly say that I am lucky enough to have an incredible support group made up my husband, family, friends, doctors, nurses, and an entire local community.  But if I have to give a shout out to one person, it would have to be my mom. Between work and my daughter’s needs, life is very busy. My mother has provided me and my husband a tremendous amount of help in every aspect of our life from babysitting to cooking meals etc.; the woman does it all.

Favorite things to do with your kids?

I am sure most moms would answer this question with something like going to the beach or going to the park. If you ask me this question next year, I hope to be able to say the same thing, but having a daughter who spends much of her time at the hospital, our reality is presently a bit different.  However, I do look for the silver linings, so if it is projecting my daughter’s favorite cartoon to watch on the hospital room wall, or snuggling on the couch together at home, I cherish every moment.

I am an attorney, and less than six months ago, I opened my own law practice Burke Williams, LLC (www.burkewilliamslaw.com) with the intention to provide family law counsel and divorce law advocacy for clients within Bergen County and throughout all of New Jersey.

The medical professionals that I selected to treat both Ryan and Berkeley were so instrumental in not only the care that they received, but also helping me through the most difficult time of my life.  These doctors and nurses have inspired me to continue to you use my professional abilities as a lawyer to help other people in what could be the most difficult time of their lives. With Burke Williams, LLC, my goal is to help my clients navigate every aspect of family law including divorce, custody disputes and child support related matters, and not only to survive these issues, but to thrive.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

The support from the local community has been nothing but overwhelming.  Since opening up my practice, I have received a number of referrals from people that I have grown up with, some of which I haven’t seen in years.

I remember thinking this as a child, and I feel it has been affirmed now more than ever, I am so fortunate to have grown up in, and now raise my own family in a community overflowing with such incredible support.
